Integration and sustainability: International outlook

Rafael Moure-Eraso, PhD, Department of Work Environment, University of Massachusetts Lowell, One University Avenue, Lowell, MA 01854, 978-934-3271, Rafael_Moure@uml.edu

Comprehensive approaches to environmental and occupational health hazard prevention, considered simultaneously, has been a concern of the United Nations for the last 15 years. It is important to stress the concept of integration as an essential component of sustainable development. It is necessary to develop an alternative to the view of "development of global free markets" (neo-liberalism) as the only ideology of a nation's development. The teaching of sustainable development at the university level in developing countries is creating the beginning of an ideologic alternative to the neo-liberalism paradigm. A discussion of the "Declarasion of Hermosillo" --the product of an international conference in Hermosillo Mexico on this theme --will be presented and discussed.
