Abstract #48704

Enhancing health planning through an e-Planner web-based communications exchange and resource repository

Thomas R. Piper, BA, Director, Missouri Certificate of Need Program, MO Department of Health, 915G Leslie Blvd., Jefferson City, MO 65101, 573-751-6403, tpiper@mail.state.mo.us

This presentation will discuss the ePlanner initiative recently established by the American Health Planning Association (AHPA). This initiative entails using the AHPA website (http://www.ahpanet.org/ ) as a web-based communications exchange and resource repository. To accomplish this objective, AHPA first identified specific “constituency groups,” such as state and local health departments, private health systems (inpatient and ambulatory providers of health care); and state and local agencies that administer certificate of need programs. For each of these constituency groups, AHPA identified a range of services or information that could assist staff of these organizations to carry out health planning activities or functions. Through its website, AHPA is making this information or services available to the constituency group through a variety of means, such as the use of a list serve on its website to provide a forum for questions and discussion to foster the interactive exchange of ideas and information. This e-Planner initiative also includes the identification of links to other websites that contain data, tools, or other information about health planning as well as a repository of papers, reports and other information related to selected health planning subjects and categories. Another component of the program is the identification and posting of names of persons knowledgeable in particular areas who are willing to make themselves available at specified times to discuss issues or answer the questions of participants. AHPA views this initiative as ongoing and intends to expand and revise it to meet the changing health planning needs of its constituency groups.
