Background: The Harvard Injury Control Research Center's National Violent Injury Statistics System (NVISS) is currently working with the Medical College of Wisconsin and other collaborating sites to develop and pilot test a prototype for the CDC's new National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS). Child Fatality Review teams (CFRTs) have been identified as a potential source of data to supplement the information already collected by NVISS. Development: A working group developed a child-specific module for NVDRS. The module standardizes the additional information not already covered in the NVISS pilot database that CFRTs commonly capture on children's suicides, homicides and firearm fatalities. Implementation: Using existing CFRT data collection forms as a guide, the group identified variables believed to be of particular value in describing violent child deaths. Only 19 of the variables were present on at least half of the data collection forms represented. Data elements included in the module were selected and defined according to four guiding principles: importance for national surveillance, simplicity, feasibility, and estimated current frequency of collection. Key module variables include how and by whom the child was being supervised, the child's family status and, in the case of self-inflicted injuries, how the child gained access to the object or substance that caused the injury. Evaluation: Following outside review, evaluation of the module will be in two phases. First, the draft module will undergo retrospective piloting in the working group members' states. Second, the module will be used to collect data prospectively, ideally in an NVISS site.
