The Christian Women*s NetWorkers Program (CWNP) describes a community-based malaria prevention project in Malawi, facilitated by two U.S. faith-based organizations and partially funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control . The CWNP, facilitated by the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the Reformed Church In America (RCA) , promotes increased utilization of intermittent presumptive treatment by pregnant women, and provides malaria prevention education and insecticide treated mosquito nets to the underserved rural population of northern Malawi, with a targeted outreach to pregnant women. Project activities are implemented by the women of PC(USA) and RCA partner churches in the project areas, and address the goals of improved health, spiritual nurture and economic empowerment. The CWNP facilitates grass-roots involvement in malaria prevention and control by providing a framework for community learning and the implementation of practices that empower communities to protect the mothers of their children. In the US, CWNP activities focus on building awareness of malaria as a global health issue within U.S. congregations and promoting financial support that will contribute to the sustainability of the overseas projects.
