The identification and measurement of Environmental Factors as part of the disablement process have emerged as important public health concerns. Attitudes toward disability – which can function as either supports or barriers -- have been identified as key components of the environment. With funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Craig Hospital has designed and is testing an instrument to measure attitudes toward disability and people with disabilities in the general population. Multiple existing instruments were examined and more than 80 questions were considered for inclusion in the survey tool as well as questions designed specifically for the new instrument. Pilot testing using 10 attitude questions administered to 200 random Colorado households indicated few differences in responses between people with disabilities and people without disabilities for most of the questions. Significant differences were found between the two groups when asked whether they agreed or disagreed with the statement “Most People in my community would treat a person with disability as they would anyone”, 43% of the Disabled disagreed, compared to 19% of the Non-disabled. A draft instrument of thirteen questions were selected and included in the 2002 Colorado Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) which will be asked of 1,000 Coloradoans by April 2002. The results of these interviews will be presented.
