HHS Department-wide Health Disparities Plan

The Department of Health and Human Services’ Initiative to Eliminate Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities serves to mobilize public/private sectors to eliminate racial and ethnic health disparities in: infant mortality, cardiovascular disease, cancer screening, HIV/AIDS, immunizations and type 2 DM. Secretary Tommy Thompson has made the elimination of health disparities a priority for the Department and has charged Deputy Secretary Claude Allen with the responsibility for leading the HHS Initiative. The Office of Minority Health (OMH) has been requested by the Office of the Secretary to coordinate the Initiative, and develop a Department wide Health Disparities Plan.

The Office of Minority Health has therefore asked that Agencies and Staff Offices in the Department submit work plans that identify the specific activities which they are currently engaged in or plan to undertake in FY 2002 and FY 2003 with regards to the HHS Initiative. OMH has merged these individual plans into one Department-wide plan. The Department-wide plan is organized according to five strategies identified in the HHS Strategic Plan, and include: strengthening the science base, engaging in strategic communications, strengthening partnerships, developing/enforcing policies, and linking people to services.
