We know that for people with disabilities obtaining services is a critical component of quality of life. We also know that accessing those services is usually easier said than done and that the inability to access services is a major contributor to the development of secondary conditions. In this session the development, piloting, and evaluation of a six module curriculum to teach parents of children with special health care needs how to play the “qualifying game” for necessary services will be described, starting with the original focus group work that uncovered the concept of the “qualifying game.” An overview of each module will also be provided: 1) developing a care book, 2) the importance of a strengths-based family centered planning approach, 3) assertiveness and self-advocacy, 4) developing and utilizing natural support resources along with dealing with reciprocity issues, 5) understanding the health care, Medicaid and insurance systems and how to deal with them, and, 6) understanding and dealing with the education system.
