A Study of Sexually Transmitted Diseases in Nigeria

Following the meeting of African Heads of State and Government at Abuja, Nigeria (April 26-27, 2001), a plan of action on control of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and other infectious diseases was drawn. One of the top ten priority areas identified in this plan is the need for information about the transmission and prevention of HIV/AIDS, and other infectious diseases, integrated in school curricula at all levels of education. Clemson University plans to cooperate with the American Association for Health Education to train Nigerian teachers for competence in teaching about STDs with a focus on HIV infection at the elementary and secondary school levels.

To determine what teachers currently know, and the resources available for effective teaching prior to intervention, Focus Group Discussions (FGD) were held with elementary and secondary school teachers in Enugu State in December 2001.

Objectives: 1. To determine through formative research the knowledge, attitude, and practice about HIV/AIDS prevention held by teachers in Enugu State. 2. To determine the resources available for effective teaching in schools 3. To ascertain the instructional needs, and willingness of teachers to be trained for effective STD teaching.

Data is currently being analyzed, however, preliminary findings indicate that while awareness level may be high among teachers, knowledge about STDs is very low, and the topic is not included in the school syllabus for both Elementary and Secondary Schools. All those interviewed will be willing to cover the area if trained.
