Building community through shared stories: Youth learning through the prism of elderly wisdom

Community members in an urban African American community recognized that life experiences, knowledge, values and expertise of aging seniors within the community, the life experiences of a generation, were being lost at considerable cost to the community. Working together, community members and some students from local schools and colleges, set about to preserve their stories and experiences. Public health nursing faculty, from a local university who have faculty practices within the community, were interested in collaborating with community members to develop programs that would address community identified health needs and quality of life issues. This collaboration resulted in the formation of the Community Arts Theater Troupe (CATT) as a forum for health promotion. It also provides a forum for intergenerational community collaboration. This collaboration includes the ‘Historical Video Project” which seeks to bridge the gap between younger members of the community and elderly seniors. This session will share the process for building on the strength of community members and their vision as well as the experiences of students and community members involved in bringing this project to completion.
