From Identity to Acronym: Health, Human Rights and the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children and Youth

This presentation will introduce participants to key aspects of health and human rights frameworks in regards to the "commercial sexual exploitation" of children and youth. By the end of this session participants will be able to:

-List different strategies employed by health promotion agencies assisting 'commercially sexually exploited" children and youth -Evaluate these strategies in terms of their utility in furthering the human rights of children and youth -Develop new approaches that promote the participation of youth in programs that concern them.

Health organizations assisting children and youth who have been trafficked into prostitution, or sexually exploited in prostitution and pornography, are increasingly informed by notions of human rights developed in the Convention on the Rights of the Child and other associated protocols and declarations for action. Currently much NGO activity in this area prioritizes the prevention of CSEC, the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children. The concept of CSEC, and the strategies for assistance work it inspires, is to some degree a departure from older less effective approaches to child prostitution and trafficking. On the other hand agencies employing the notion of CSEC to assist homeless youth may inadvertently undermine young people's ability to participate as equal partners in programs that directly affect them. The presentation ultimately aims to provide participants with practical methods to evaluate the pros and cons of existing assistance strategies and some departure points for exploring new models for change.
