In order for faculty, staff, and students from major academic health centers to become more adept and responsive to the needs of their surrounding community, they need to develop the skills necessary for effective engagement within the community. To address this issue, the Johns Hopkins Urban Health Institute has designed an eight point plan to develop, incorporate, and promote community-based participatory research.

The ultimate goal for this initiative is to create a "home" for community-based research at Johns Hopkins University that helps connect faculty and community members as well as foster and support interest among students and trainees. It is essential that this initiative not sit in any one health professional school or department because of the inherent need and opportunity for transdisciplinary collaboration. The elements are as follows:

1. Grant watch/centralized clearing house for funding opportunities 2. Community mapping/Issue identification 3. Assisting community organizations in becoming viable research partners 4. Urban Community Health Grand Rounds 5. Promote CBPR skill development among interested faculty and community members 6. Local dissemination of Hopkins Research 7. Community Accountability in the Research Review Process 8. Junior faculty support

Though we expect the full implementation of this plan to take approximately three years, we will present the framework, infrastructure development, and year one activities at the APHA meeting.
