A cross sectional study was conducted from May 1997 to April 1998 to assess prevalence of visual impairment and its causes in 50 years and above in the rural population of an East Delhi village. The study population comprised of 46.4% males and 54.6% females. In present study 89% of the surveyed population had ocular morbidity. The total of 346 eyes were affected. The leading cause was found to be cataract, which accounted for 56.4% of the total etiology. The prevalence of visual impairment was 56.6% (visual acuity < 6/18 minimum in the better eye). A significant increase in visual impairment was seen with increasing age, illiteracy, and tobacco chewers. Hence, to understand the effect of various socio demographic correlates on the prevalence of visual impairment more community based studies need to be done.
