Healthy People 2010 enhances the capacity to interpret community health measures by providing a common framework for national, state, and community assessments. Using this framework, a partnership of university and hospital-based researchers designed the community health assessment of the of North Mississippi Health Services (NMHS) catchments area (over 650,000 people in 22 counties through northeast Mississippi and northwest Alabama) to collect regional data on the Healthy People 2010 objectives and leading health indicators. A random-digit-dialing telephone survey collected primary data from adults in the NMHS catchments area, while the BRFSS provided state-level estimates and national medians. This session will highlight the methodology and application of this assessment, as well as the application of state and national secondary data to provide context for survey findings. Highlighted outcomes include: the application of these data to set the NMHS agenda; initial indications that smoking cessation programs and flu immunization programs are impacting the catchments area; and the development of a NMHS community health inventory.
