Abstract #49774

Coordination of State and Federal Surveillance Systems for Environmental Health Tracking

Leslie Tucker, Mt. Sinai Center for Children's Health and the Environment, 1307 New York Avenue, NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20005, 202-466-2044, lrasar@psr.org

How will a Nationwide Health Tracking Network incorporate and utilize the various federal and state systems already in place that currently track disease and environmental exposure? In December 2001, CDC convened four working groups to provide recommendations about how the environmental health tracking network could logistically be accomplished. Working groups considered the following topics: overall administration and management of the network; assessment of existing health and environmental tracking systems to determine how linkages can be established between them and evaluation of the utility of non-traditional data sources such as health plan data; technology and data management; and communication and use of information from the network.

The speaker will discuss how various state and federal agencies (including the CDC, the EPA, ATSDR, USGS, state environmental agencies, state health departments, etc.) have worked together to develop a set of recommendations and what the recommendations entail. She will describe the emerging roles of various agencies in this new health tracking network and outline how data from government agencies, state agencies, and non-traditional sources (such as health plans and schools) will eventually be linked together.
