Abstract #49860

Innovative Pilot Projects to Demonstrate the Effectiveness of the Environmental Health Tracking Network

Judith R. Qualters, PhD, Environmental Health Tracking Branch, DEHHE/NCEH/CDC, 1600 Clifton Rd, NE, MS-E19, Atlanta, GA 30333, 404-498-1815, jqualters@cdc.gov

In April 2002, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an RFA for state demonstration projects that will eventually contribute to the nationwide environmental health tracking network. Demonstration projects were required to illustrate collaboration between state agencies that normally do not work together, such as the health department and the state environmental agency or a health department and a managed care organization. The speaker will discuss the pilot projects developed by states and funded by the CDC. These pilot projects will allow states to develop initiatives on disease tracking and allow state and local health departments to strengthen their ability to respond to public health threats – whether from disease or criminal acts. The pilot projects will allow state and local health departments to invest significant resources in three areas: · More and better trained public health professionals; · Better-equipped laboratory facilities; and · State-of-the-art early-warning systems and communication networks.

The speaker will describe coordinated and comprehensive approaches to disease tracking and any potentially related environmental exposures. The funded projects will attempt to determine where and when chronic diseases like cancer and asthma occur using national standards for defining chronic disease. The speaker will describe how these statewide projects ultimately will feed into a nationwide network.
