Abstract #49867

Bringing it Back to the Community: How Health Tracking is Applied at the Community Level

Linda Lanier, Founder and President, The Sarcoidosis Awareness Network, Inc., 10313 Farrar Avenue, Cheltenham, MD 20623-1026, (202)372-2885, tsan4u@aol.com

Implementing a successful nationwide health tracking network requires input and support from activists on a local level who can also communicate the need for health tracking to federal policymakers. This presentation will illustrate, from a community perspective, the effects of environmental hazards on the public and provide an example of how communities from all over the United States have become active in advocating for better monitoring of environmental exposures and tracking of health outcomes.

Using personal examples, this session will highlight the importance of activist organizations and community organizing in the promotion and support of a public health initiative like an environmental health tracking network. This session will also highlight how health tracking data and information can be used with the community to better inform prevention strategies and discuss how the development of collaborations and partnership with health and environmental organizations is critical for the development of an effective tracking network.
