Nancy L. Rothman, EdD, RN and Rita J. Louries, MSN, RN. Department of Nursing, CAHP, Temple University, 3307 N. Broad Street 602-00, Philadelphia, PA 19140, 215-707-5436, nrothman@vm.temple.edu

Lead Awareness: North Philly Style is a demonstration/research project that tested the implementation and evaluation of community-driven strategies addressing childhood lead poisoning. The aims were: 1. To test community-developed, community-based prevention/intervention strategies that would increase knowledge regarding the environmental health risk of childhood lead poisoning and 2. To test community-based prevention/intervention strategies that would increase hazard, exposure and outcome surveillance for lead as an environmental agent. Community-developed, community-based prevention/intervention strategies increased the number of children tested for lead and decreased blood lead levels in experimental census tracts over control census tracts.

In addition, to briefly sharing this project, strategies will be presented that have been used to integrate environmental research into academic nursing at Temple University. The Department of Nursing, College of Allied Health Professions, has strengthened its environmental health curricula and service delivery through a community-based primary health care academic nursing practice. Prime areas targeted include disparity in health for urban underserved at risk populations, environmental justice, poverty, lead poisoning prevention, asthma and environmental exposures.
