Abstract #50037

Subtypes of pregnant and parenting teens: Assessing risk in a diverse population

Catherine Feuer, PhD, Evaluation, Management and Training, 408 North Euclid, St. Louis, MO 63108, (314)367-1300, catherine@emt.org

Pregnant and parenting teens come from a variety of cultural backgrounds, differ in age and maturity level and differ on patterns of risk and protective factors. Distinct types of adolescent parents require different intervention approaches, both for the prevention of pregnancy and the prevention of pre- and post-natal psychosocial problems for mother and child. The CSAP Parenting Adolescents project is a ten site study designed to assess the impact of a variety of social service programs on the lives of pregnant and parenting teenaged girls. Data from 1762 of these teens were examined to identify subtypes of pregnant and parenting teens. Subtypes were established using hierarchical cluster analysis and verified using a q-type factor analysis and a discriminant function analysis. The analyses revealed four subtypes with distinct patterns of environmental, internal and behavioral risk and protective factors. Results will be discussed in terms of their relevance to program planning.
