Abstract #50051

Strengthening environmental health services in Island County, WA

Timothy L. McDonald, RS MPH, Keith H. Higman, and Celine P. Servatius. Island County Health Department, Island County Health Department, P.O. Box 5000, Coupeville, WA 98239, 360-679-7350, timm@co.island.wa.us

The Island County Environmental Health Initiative (ICEHI) implements a community-based assessment and action process based on the national PACE-EH (Protocol for Assessing Community Excellence in Environmental Health) model. The project examines both traditional (water, sewage, food safety) as well as emerging (toxic exposure risks, bioterrorism, emerging pathogens) environmental health indicators and develops priority issues and activities specific to Island County, Washington. Aimed at identifying local environmental health priorities defined by the community rather than the traditional, top-down regulatory model, the approach is science-based. This project builds on current county assessment, management, and communication activities related to environmental health, and fosters positive working relationships with the community, as integral steps toward achieving the goal of expanding environmental health capacity on the local level, particularly in areas of the Ten Essential Environmental Health Services. Environmental Health practitioners will learn more about developing alternative approaches to prioritizing environmental health issues, working with communities to identify and solve environmental health problems, and how to build capacity at the county level in the areas of the Ten Essential Environmental Health Services.
