Sarah Kotchian, EdM, MPH, PHD, University of New Mexico, 1530 Eagle Ridge Drive NE, Albuquerque, NM 87122, (505) 856-1268, skotchian@home.com

In 2001, the CDC/National Center for Environmental Health awarded cooperative agreements to local and state departments of public health and to academic institutions to improve the nation’s capacity to provide the ten essential environmental health services. This presentation will demonstrate how several state and local environmental health agencies are putting into practice one or more of these services, and summarize their successes and learning opportunities. Multiple presenters will describe the assessment, community development, implementation, and evaluation steps involved in improving an agency’s capacity to perform these services. Participants will be able to list the ten essential environmental health services, describe why these services provide a strong framework for community environmental health, and understand various strategies for implementing the services based on local and state needs. Participants will also become aware of resources available to help them improve their own agency capacity to provide the ten essential environmental health services. This session is geared towards agency leaders, program directors, and others interested in taking a leadership role in building environmental health capacity.
