Abstract: Sexually transmitted infections (STI) and HIV/AIDS are globally growing reproductive health risks for female sex workers (FSWs), particularly in South-East Asia. Condom use for penetrative sex is one strategy of "safer sex." Female sex workers, however, are at particular risk for STI and HIV contraction, because they have a high number of sexual partners and practice sex without condoms. This study attempts to examine the impact of the shift in attitudes toward condom use among FSWs. More specifically, at an establishment level, attitudes could be conceptualized as "norms" formed by consensual agreements between FSWs and their employers, shaping FSWs' behaviors in a powerful way; therefore, we will also investigate how reciprocal changes in attitudes toward condom use work as mechanisms through which condom use is expected to practice and STI and HIV rates are hypothesized to decrease. The data were collected from establishment-based female sex workers in four islands of the Philippines (southern Luzon, Cebu, Ilo-Ilo and northern Mindanao). A total of 1340 FSWs were interviewed in the baseline assessment. Results will focus on the social and environmental determinants of condom use behavior using hierarchical regression modeling. The application of this study will be useful to future international intervention programs designed and research on reproductive health related to STI and HIV/AIDS preventions among FSWs.
