Abstract #50630

Human Rights and Sexuality: Strange Bedfellows or Strategic Partners?

Françoise Girard, LLB; MA and Cynthia Rothschild, MIA, MPH. International Women's Health Coalition, 24 East 21st Street, New York, NY 10010, 212-979-8500, fgirard@iwhc.org

While sexuality was not part of the landscape of the now 50 year-old "modern" human rights movement, "sexual rights" has become a potentially groundbreaking new category of human rights analysis and activism. Increasingly, health, human rights, and feminist advocates are using a human rights analysis to promote rights of, and prevent violations against, all people in relation to their sexual identities, expression, and reproductive decisions. In addition, the current nexus of health, sexuality and human rights advocacy provides creative opportunities for strengthened collaborative international efforts, particularly in the arenas of what has often been called "sexual health" or "reproductive rights." This presentation will explore a range of salient issues posed by sexual rights advocacy, including how conservative and fundamentalist agendas collude to limit women's rights to control what they do with - and what happens to - their bodies. We will also explore the ways adopting sexual rights strategies stands to potentially benefit health, feminist and human rights advocacy, just as deploying the tools associated with human rights activism stands to benefit those seeking to further sexuality-related health or political agendas.
