In a recent survey, the American Heart Association reported that nearly two thirds of persons with diabetes had already experienced some form of cardiovascular disease (CVD) although only one third of respondents believed themselves to be at increased risk due to their diabetes. While it is one thing to identify the existence of such a risk, it is another more complex issue to measure it. In this analysis we attempt to quantify this increased risk of CVD experienced by persons with diabetes.

Methods: Estimates of the population of known diabetics were calculated from several years of BRFSS (Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System) data and U.S. Census measures. Utilizing hospital discharge data and calculated rates for populations with and without diabetes, comparative analysis was done on hospital discharges for CVD among persons with diabetes (determined by a secondary diagnosis of diabetes) and persons without diabetes.

Results: Persons with diabetes had at least 8 to 11 times the rate of hospitalization for CVD when compared to persons without diabetes, regardless of stratification by race, gender, age, or locality. The most startling results were in age stratification, where persons with diabetes exhibited similar hospitalizations rates as those without diabetes, but were found to experience them 20 to 25 years earlier.
