The focus of our 1st integrative session, linking the 3 themes of the Spirit of 1848 Caucus (politics of public health data; social history of public health; progressive pedagogy) is on: "Latin American Social Medicine and the quest for social justice & public health." Simultaneously a set of theoretical frameworks and methods for research and a movement explicitly connecting issues of social justice and public health, the varied strands of Latin American social medicine provide important insights into societal determinants of health and the kinds of social transformation necessary for achieving social equity in health.
