Jerald Fagliano, MPH, PhD, Consumer and Environmental Health Services, NJ Department of Health and Senior Services, PO Box 369, Trenton, NJ 08625, 609-588-3120, jerald.fagliano@doh.state.nj.us

This session will consist of a series of presentations on the Dover Township (Toms River) Childhood Cancer investigation, and a discussion among leaders of the community and agencies responsible for the investigation. The Dover Township investigation began with a systematic evaluation of cancer incidence and assessments of environmental exposures in the community. Based on findings from these initial stages of investigation, a case-control epidemiologic study was conducted to examine the relationship between specific past exposures and cancer incidence among children. Presentations will: provide background on the scope of the cancer incidence problem and environmental exposures of concern in the community; discuss methods used to address challenges in reconstructing past exposures in an epidemiologic investigation, including the use of computer models; and provide details on the methods, results and conclusions of the epidemiologic study. Discussants will consider issues such as the roles of community organizations and public health and other officials at various levels of government in cluster investigations, scientific advances and limitations, and communication of study results.
