Philadelphia Anti-drug, Anti-violence Network (PAAN) has developed a mentoring program called Youth Educators for Safety (YES) that addresses youth violence in North Philadelphia, a section of the city with one of the highest rates of this type of violence. Through a pilot study, PAAN developed a group of youth leaders (ages 12-18) that examined issues relating to youth violence, presented that information to community groups and to children in elementary school, and helped to foster intergenerational collaborations between seniors and the youths. As a results of these efforts, the youths felt more connected with their community and worked to change some of the physical environmental conditions such as trash and abandoned care removal as a response to a previous needs assessment. By addressing the social environmental issue of violence, the youths felt empowered to include aspects of the physical environment.
