Abstract #51209

Creating web-based sexual health information for teens

Lydia Franco and Shiri Ourian. Planned Parenthood Federation, 810 Seventh Ave., New York, NY 10019, 212/541-7800, Lydia.Franco@ppfa.org

teenwire.com was created by Planned ParenthoodŽ Federation of America as a way to reach teens with accurate sexual health and relationship information through a new medium. Content for the Web site is derived from a variety of sources including teen feedback, writers' submissions, new medical information and research, and popular culture. Articles undergo an extensive review process for accuracy and Web-readability. Staff create educational and engaging experiences by packaging content in a variety of formats, such as articles, question and answer, interactive quizzes, games, and video. Furthermore, teenwire.com reaches a more diverse and even global audience through the World Views and Spanish language sections.

The presenters will discuss how they actively encourage educators to use teenwire.com and the Internet in teaching about health and sexuality. teenwire.com can be used as a springboard for group discussions on sexual health and can provide educators with critical information about what teens want and need to know. In conjunction with Planned Parenthood of Greater Northern New Jersey, the presenters created a lesson plan on how teens can use the Internet for sexual health information. Because there still remains a disparity in Internet access, a teenwire.com CD-ROM was created that includes teenwire.com animated quizzes, suggested lesson plans, and articles from the Web site as a way for educators without Internet access to provide this valuable information in a creative way. Future projects include the production of a manual on how to use teenwire.com and the formation of a teen advisory board.
