Integrating quality considerations in health web site operations

healthfinder.gov is the official Federal cross-agency portal web site for consumer health information. In operation since April 1997, the site has been an ongoing experiment in building, evaluating, and designing a gateway information web site with user participation.

We will discuss the strategies used in developing healthfinder.gov from initial conception to the current audience-focused version of the site. We will discuss how to ensure the quality and integrity of resources with a rigorous yet evolving selection policy and a consensus-based interagency approach. Several different methodologies have been used to evaluate the site over time, and the most useful aspects of each will be highlighted.
