Abstract #51511

Privatizing water: A first-hand report from Ghana

Ellen R Shaffer, PhD, UCSF, 98 Seal Rock Drive, San Francisco, CA 94121, 415-933-6204, ershaffer@earthlink.net

Unsafe drinking water causes significant disease and mortality in developing and developed nations. International lending agencies increasingly encourage privatization of water systems as a condition of aid, an alternative decisively rejected in Bolivia. Views from Ghana, including civil society, government, and the private sector will be presented, based on resesarch and a fact-finding mission.
