Abstract #51584

Private Support for Population and Reproductive Health -- New Developments, New Issues

Denise Shannon, BJ, Funders Network on Population, Reproductive Health and Rights, 1410 Crestwood Road, Austin, TX 78722, 512 302 9102, denise@fundersnet.org

Private support for population and reproductive health has increased sharply since Cairo with the development of new or expanded programs by west coast foundations. At the same time, stalwarts in population giving have announcement their intention to scale back or end their population assistance programs. Finally, many foundations have been especially hard-hit by declines in the stockmarket, leading them to scale back or not renew grants.

This paper reviews recent trends in private donor assistance for population and reproductive health since the International Conference on Population and Development in 1994. It discusses funders' concerns and priorities for the future of private support for population activities.
