The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion recognizes the essential role of local action in the overall success of the Healthy People 2010 initiative. To foster this action, several activities are underway. In support of the Healthy People 2010 goal of eliminating health disparities, web sites like healthfinder® are being tailored for specific audiences through community involvement. We have developed relationships with local and national representatives of faith organizations, sharing and learning how we can best work with these groups to implement Healthy People 2010 in local communities. In addition, in October 2001, ODPHP awarded cooperative agreements to two intermediary organizations to manage regional pilots of the Healthy People 2010 Community Implementation Program. These organizations are administering microgrants (of up to $2010 each) to local community-based organizations in their areas to stimulate health promotion and disease prevention activities that support the national health goals of Healthy People 2010.The purpose of this session is to generate discussion regarding community strategies to support Healthy People 2010 at the local level.
