Abstract #52067

Human Rights Violations in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Jack Geiger, MD, ScD, Prof. of Community Medicine, CUNY Medical School, City College of New York, New York, NY 10031, (212) 650-6860, jgeiger@igc.org

Major violations of human rights, medical neutrality and international humanitarian law were committed by both sides of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict both before, during and after the two invasions of the Occupied Territories in March, April and May. Some of these violations were unique to these invasions, while others have been longstanding, persistent and ongoing. These violations were documented by a Physicians for Human Rights mission to Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip in March, with findings consistent with subsequent reports by PHR-Israel, B'tselem, the International Committee of the Red Cross, Human Rights Watch, and UN agencies. The violations include deliberate assaults on civilians, destruction of civilian infrastructure including medical facilities, assaults on ambulances and emergency personnel, prolonged denial of access to medical care, and reports of war crimes. The failure to address and demand accountability for such violations constitutes a continuing threat to civilian populations and to the maintenance of international human rights laws.
