Abstract #52090

NAFTA and Public Health in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico

Matthew Sanger, Canada, 24 Bellwood Ave., Ottawa, ON K1S 1S7, Canada, 613-730-1425, msanger@canada.com

As reported in Bill Moyers' "Trading Democacy," NAFTA has resulted in cases that undermine public health regulations. The MTBE case in California (the US is being sued for $970 million US, because California removed a carcinogen from gasoline); Metalclad - Mexico had to pay $16 million US to a company that never had a permit to reopen a toxic waste dump - but won because that cost them potential profits; and the case of Loewen Group, the Canadian funeral company that lost a civil case for $125 million in Mississippi and now is suing the US government for $750 million.
