Judith Hays, PhD, Center for the Study of Relition and Health, Duke University Medical Center, Box 3003 DUMC, Durham, NC 27710, 919-660-7556, valerie.okrend@apha.org

This presentation will describe the limitations of existing research on trajectories of religion and spirituality over the life course. It will use examples from the narrative histories of Catholic, Protestant and Jewish elders who grew up in the Midwest and Eastern seaboard of the US, South America, and Nazi-occupied France to present a new survey instrument, the Spiritual History Scale in 4 Dimentions(SHS-4). It will present epidemiologic evidence that cumulative lifetime spiritual history affects mental and physical health and social support into the 7th, 8th, and 9th decades of life.
