Community Health Workers as Environmental Activists

Guadalupe Cintron and Catherine Morain. Germantown MOMobile, Wister Tower, 1 Penn Blvd., Philadelphia, PA 19144, 215-951-8089, lupe@momobile.org

The MOMobile, a program of the Maternity Care Coalition, provides home visiting, support and referral services to low income women who are pregnant and parenting young children. Located in the northwest section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Germantown MOMobile has piloted a specialized education and research effort, the Healthy Homes Initiative. In this initiative, Community Health Workers, or MOMobile Advocates, conduct home visits to support women in the community to improve the environmental health of their homes and their families. Advocates educate women in four areas: lead exposure, environmental tobacco smoke, asthma, and pest control/household cleaning products. Providing materials to women including buckets, environmentally safe cleaning products and literature, the MOMobile Advocates have positively impacted their community. This presentation will demonstrate the Healthy Homes Initiative intervention, describe client success stories, and present results of evaluation of the program.
