Abstract #52350

“Baby Bucks”: An Incentive Program to Encourage Clients’ Personal Responsibility and Participation in Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition Activities

Zalika Shani, MPH, CHES, Janet Nieves, MA, Marilyn Kelly, and Jennifer Auer. Southern New Jersey Perinatal Cooperative, 2500 McClellan Ave, Pennsauken, NJ 08109, 856-963-1013, zshani@snjpc.org

The Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Camden (HMHBC), Outreach and Case Management Program follows pregnant and postpartum women who have sought late or no prenatal care, have health insurance issues, or have babies who are not up to date on their immunizations for up to two years. The program is funded through the New Jersey Department of health and Senior Services and Healthy Start, a program of HRSA, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. Clients are provided with support and health education through regular contact with case managers and health advocates at home and in the community. They are encouraged to make healthy choices for themselves and their babies by participating in preventive health care, support groups and community-based activities.

The Baby Bucks incentive program was developed by HMHB Outreach Staff to provide tangible rewards for clients’ participation in healthy activities such as attendance at prenatal, postpartum, dental and well baby appointments, WIC enrollment, family planning consultation, returning to school after delivery, or completion of a GED or college degree. Clients receive rewards for participating in educational and coalition forums to discuss health care and parenting issues. Baby Bucks are earned for each of these activities, and clients may “purchase” items with their coupons at the HMHB Central Office store or have items delivered to their homes. Rewards range from 40 to 300 “Bucks” and include items such as teething rings, pacifiers, educational toys, potty seats and high chairs.

Presenters will describe the program and results to workshop participants.
