Abstract #52562

"Where reality meets the unpaved road to improved health:" The Roles of Community Health Representatives in Community Based Health Care

Ramona Dillard, Laguna Community Health Representative Program, P.O. Box 194, Laguna, NM 87026, 505-552-6652, eleer@qwest.net

Community Health Representatives (CHRs) have provided community based care services to Native people on reservations since 1967. They address issues such as prenatal care, cancer, health access, patient enrollment, diabetes, cancer, HIV/AIDS and many other health problems. CHRs have learned to drive the health care needs of the "client or tribal member" as the critical focus for all service providers connecting for care in the home or field. The work that CHRs do is extremely challenging, stressful and often times difficult. The National Association of Community Health Representatives provides a forum for CHRs to be trained in basic knowledge and then refreshed or updated on critical information. The NACHR recognizes CHRs nationally at their triennial conference for years of services ranging from 5 years to 30 years.
