Abstract #52663

Raising Arizona public health

Vanessa Hill, MS, RN, Arizona Department of Health Services, 1740 W Adams, Phoenix, AZ 85007 and Elsie E. Eyer, MS, Community & Family Health Services, Arizona Dept of Health Services, 1740 W. Adams, Suite 307, Phoenix, AZ 85007, (602) 542-1223, vhill@hs.state.az.us.

The Arizona Public Health Association (AzPHA) has undertaken a comprehensive strategic planning process to help identify the primary recipients of its work, what it does to provide those recipients with value, and the processes necessary to make the connection.

The Association participated in the preparation of a marketing and business plan and the development of an operating budget. The latter gives it the basis to make informed decisions about which of many recommended activities it can afford to support. It also developed important assumptions about funding the association and its future work.

In an effort to give focus to its activities, and to assure a common direction for its future, AZPHA adopted a new organizational vision and mission.

The question, “For whom does AzPHA do what?” identified four priority stakeholder groups – Public Health People, General Public, Allied Associations, and Policy Makers and Legislators. Three goals were developed for each stakeholder group, activities recommended and a proposed budget created to accomplish the activities. From the marketing and strategic business plan a fundraising plan was written to accomplish the goals and activities.

Activities include launching an annual funding program at the AZPHA Fall Conference. A membership campaign will target AZPHA members who are not APHA members and APHA members who are not members of AZPHA. The first activity is a survey providing membership information. The primary question will be “What would cause you to join APHA or AZPHA?”
