The purpose of the study was to demonstrate the value of a multi-disciplinary team approach in establishing a comprehensive Bone Health Program within a managed care organization. Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States'(KPMAS) Bone Health Program (BHP) includes patient education, quantitative ultrasound (QUS), a mobile dual x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) unit, specialty referral guidelines, and a patient risk assessment tool. The Chief of Rheumatology/Associate Medical Director directs the BHP. In 2000, a health educator implemented a QUS screening and patient education program. In 2001, KPMAS purchased a mobile DEXA unit and began offering DEXA scans and health education to its at-risk members. The mobile DEXA unit is equipped with computers and a video unit for patient use in reviewing osteoporosis educational materials. KPMAS brochures on calcium and osteoporosis are also available. KPMAS quality/clinical guidelines staff and physicians developed evidence-based specialty referral guidelines for osteoporosis screening. KPMAS also developed a patient risk assessment tool for use with both men and women. KPMAS plans to collect data to determine the impact of point of service patient education when compared to regular health education classes
