Refugees and asylum seekers often face extraordinary health risks. Government policies may ignore or compound those risks. These issues have taken on particular importance because of international events and government responses in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001. This session addresses the health needs of, and policies towards, diverse refugee populations including Afghan refugees in Pakistan, Somali and Oromo women war refugees, detained asylum seekers in the United States, and Hmong refugees in the United States.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: 1) Describe the special health risks of several refugee populations. 2) Recognize the diversity of refugee experiences. 3) Assess the impact of government policies on refugees and asylum seekers.
