| Environmental justice research has primarily focussed on the disproportionate burden of environmental hazards (e.g presence and location of waste treatment facilities, industrial operations, bus depots ) in low-income or minority communities. Health statistics also reveal shorter life expectancy among the poor and communities of color, as well as higher rates of cancer, birth defects, infant mortality, asthma, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Although health care access might account for some of this disparity, the differences in environmental and occupational exposures are also thought to play a role. New research focussing on environmental exposures in minority communities may provide the critical link between the presence of an environmental hazard and environmentally related disease. The purpose of this session is to highlight current community-based research that focuses on exposure assessment and to identify public health policy implications of the research findings. Session presenters will cover a range of environmental pollutants (particulate matter, pesticides, and air toxics) in different geographic locations (Northern Manhattan and South Bronx, New York, Chester and Southwest Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Los Angeles, California) . | |||
