The healthcare industry, in response to changes in legislation, reimbursement mechanisms, economic pressures, and new technology, has made dramatic changes in the organization of health care delivery and consequently the content of work for 11 million health care workers. Work organization characteristics, such as scheduling, workload, shiftwork, health and safety programs, impact worker health. Health care workers are at increased risk of musculoskeletal disorders, job strain, depression, needlesticks and other work related injuries and illnesses. There is also ample evidence that patient care is compromised by these working conditions. This panel will discuss results from ongoing studies of work organization in the health care sector and the methodological challenges involved in exposure assessment for this sector.
Learning Objectives: 1) Identify common hazards facing health care workers 2) Describe the importance of the independent provider model of home care services to worker health and safety 3) Discuss strategies to address health care health and safety including health and safety committees and coalitions
