Caries in Early Childhood and School-aged Children
Hygienists work in varied settings to coordinate treatment and preventive services for at-risk children. This session will examine approaches used in three public health settings: a school-based program in Vermont, the school-based approach used in Portland, Oregon, and efforts to reach young Native American/Alaskan Native children to prevent early childhood caries.
Learning Objectives: Recognize the various roles for dental hygienists in public health practice addressing caries in children. Describe current approaches to improving infant and child oral health. Identify the rationale for employing school-based dental hygienists in the role of case managers to assure children with Medicaid or SCHIP are linked to dental care homes.
