| At the end of the session, participants will be able to explore the applicability of the diverse political and programmatic strategies used by the anti-tobacco groups in curbing the overweight and obesity epidemic among youth, review the potential political force that contributes to policy implementation, and analyze the rationale for the USDA regulatory changes in the school meals program between 1992 and 1996 and the role of interest groups in affecting the shape and direction of the policy. Participants will also be able to identify the measures of social marginalization of overweight children and adolescents. Concerning food and nutrition safety, at the end of this session, participants will be able to assess the public health importance of food safety issues, describe the consumer level of knowledge about food irradiation, biotechnology and organic food technologies and compare consumer attitudes toward the three technologies in a fourth dimension. | |||
| Learning Objectives: This educational session, will focus on exploring programatic strategies and political forces that could contribute to establish a framework for the development and implementation of Food and Nutrition Policy. The following topics are covered: obesity-child health, food and nutrition rationale for policy-making, food and nutrition safety- food irradiation and public health. | |||
