Disparities in health have been documented repeatedly over the last few decades across a broad range of medical conditions and for a wide range of ethnic and racial groups. These differences have been noted in health outcomes such as quality of life and mortality, processes of care such as utilization rates of certain services, quality and appropriateness of care, and the prevalence of certain conditions or diseases. However, little is known regarding disparities in tobacco smoking and tobacco-related health risks in a number of vulnerable population groups, including 7th to 10th graders in rural communities, young adults age 18-24, indigent women of childbearing age, and older adults. The purpose of this session is to present ongoing NCI-sponsored tobacco control research on these vulnerable groups. Studies describe smoking behavior and identify strategies specifically designed to reach these special populations.
Learning Objectives: The participant (learner) will be able to describe smoking behavior in a number of target populations and identify tobacco control strategies specifically designed to reach these special populations.
