Comprehensive ATOD Prevention System: Logic, Components and Advocacy Agenda
A significant challenge in the prevention of ATOD problems is to move from a collection of ad hoc, divergent and well-intended initiatives to a comprehensive prevention system. This panel session will introduce a model for a comprehensive prevention system for the States and the country, based on the best research available. It will discuss the underlying logic and theory of the model. It will outline the main components, indicate goals and focus populations and strategies as they related to potential impacts. The panel will consider options and steps with regard advocating this agenda and moving it forward. In this context, the panel will discuss what is in place with regard to the proposed system, what is needed, and what steps should be taken to advance this platform. Finally, the deliberations at this session will provide the basis for subsequent communications in order to develop a ‘white paper’ on this topic. The panel will consist of the following five persons: Lee Wilson, Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, SAMHSA (chair of the panel); Barbara A. Cimaglio, Office of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs, Oregon Department of Human Services; Robert W. Denniston, Office of National Drug Control Policy; Norman A. Giesbrecht, Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation; and, Sue Thau, Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America.
