Performance measures estimate or monitor the extent to which the actions of a health care practitioner or provider conform to practice guidelines, medical review criteria, or standards of quality. Alcohol and other drug disorders present special challenges in terms of performance measurement, because these illnesses are unique among chronic disorders. In vulnerable individuals, these chemicals can disrupt users' awareness of satiety; result in behavioral dyscontrol, danger and illness; and reinforce patients' tendencies to exacerbate their illnesses. In addition, patient/provider relationships are complicated when addressing substance use disorders. Nonetheless, performance measures are needed to establish clear standards of accountability that, in turn, will lead to efforts to improve the quality of care for people with AOD disorders. The purpose of this session is to present new performance measures for AOD services, and to explore the complex issues involved in developing, calculating, and using performance measures in this area. | |||
