Oral
Cutting Edge Issues in HIV Prevention
The changing face of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and alarming new epidemiological trends have called attention to current HIV prevention efforts and new areas where prevention efforts are needed. Three topics of particular relevance to the HIV epidemic are: 1) STD and HIV integration, 2) MSM issues, and 3) prevention for HIV positive individuals. The strong link between the rate of STD and HIV infections suggests that integrating prevention efforts can lead to greater successes. Increases in STDs and HIV among gay, bisexual and MSM, are prompting HIV prevention programs to reevaluate and address HIV infection increases. Increases are particularly high in MSM of color and young MSM, underscoring the importance of specifically targeted programs. Also, prevention for HIV positive individuals has begun to be diffused across the country, after 20 years of the epidemic. This important and neglected area of prevention focuses on the health of positive people and can decrease transmission rates and promote healthier behaviors. The presenters will also discuss the current gaps in HIV prevention efforts and report on HIV prevention programs that have been proven effective in these areas.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the participants will be able to: 1) identify the emerging issues of the HIV/AIDS epidemic; 2) identify the current gaps in HIV prevention efforts and; 3) report on HIV prevention programs that have been proven effective in MSM populations, HIV positive people and integrating STD and HIV issues.
