Rewards and Challenges of Community-Based Health Studies

Community-based studies can be very powerful, avoiding the biases associated with studying clinic patients or volunteers, yet the logistics of undertaking large-scale studies in the community can be daunting, time-consuming, and costly. In this symposium we will present investigators' experiences with two large community-based epidemiologic investigations of urologic disorders. One study is well-established and one is in the initial stages of cohort development allowing the symposium to consider experiences from study design and sampling methods to quality control, cohort maintenance, and analysis. Community leaders will describe their experiences and recommendations for establishing successful and productive community partnerships.
