Poster
Children with special health care needs
The purpose of this session is to address ways in which public health research, planning, and principles have been used to support implementation of the nation's 10-Year Agenda for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs. This national agenda, entitled "All Aboard the 2010 Express" was developed to operationalize the Healthy People 2010 objective calling for state systems of care for children with special health care needs. The Maternal and Child Health Bureau in partnerships with parents, providers, and other key stakeholders for children and youth with special health care needs identified the following six indicators of an effective system of care: 1) all CSHCN will receive coordinated, ongoing, comprehensive care within a medical home; 2) all families of CSHCN will have adequate private and/or public insurance to pay for the services they need; 3) all children will be screened early and continuously for special health care needs; 4) services for CSHCN and their families will be organized in ways that families can use them easily; 5) families of CSHCN will partners in decision making at all levels and will be satisfied with the services they receive; and 6) all youth with special health care needs receive the services necessary to make appropriate transitions to all aspects of adult life, including adult health care, work , and independence.
Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to discuss how public health principles and practices can be used to improve the organization, delivery and financing of services and supports for children and youth with special health care needs and their families. Participants will understand the significance of having a national agenda as a means of unifying and integrating diverse systems enhancement efforts.
